This is normally done only when you need to be found for highly competitive search terms and getting high ranking on the searching is difficult due to the quantity of other sites listed for the search term.

These paid listing 'Sponsored Links' appear above or by the side of the normal search results 'natural listing'. The cost of having Sponsored links depends on the competition for the term and can range from 4p up to £10+, these charges however are only paid once a user chooses to visit your site by clicking your advert.
